Good Pastures, Good Meadows: Mountain Farmers’ Assessment, Perceptions on Ecosystem Services, and Proposals for Biodiversity Management

An ongoing decrease in habitat and species diversity is occurring many areas across Europe, including grasslands mountain areas, calling for adapted biodiversity management measures. In this context, we carried out 79 interviews with grassland farmers five alpine regions Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland. We analyzed farmers’ perceptions about the functions services of their grasslands, how they qualify “good” which practices have changed over last 10 years, proposals to increase on farm. They related them primarily cultural ecosystem services, secondly provisioning thirdly regulating supporting services. Good pastures or meadows were mostly composition, quality forage productivity, structural criteria, certain characteristics soils topography. The measures increasing that most frequently proposed upgrading forest edges, planting hedges fruit trees, less late cutting, reduction omission fertilization, more general extensification farm productions. Factors hindering implementation these mainly increased workload, insufficient time, a lack financial means support cover additional costs management. These factors be taken specifically into account future policies enhanced also beyond mountainous areas. Overall, found good but varying knowledge different perspectives improve it.
